Prime Time off Tampa on Deep Wrecks and Hard Bottom

Report Date: May 2, 2013

Weather has finally warmed up and the fish are starting to move in! May will be a very good month for fishing offshore, in depths of 80 to 140 feet of water. This is the prime time of year and there will be many species to pick from: blackfin tuna, kingfish, amberjack, mangrove snapper, red grouper, lane snapper, shark and cobia. At these depths, your find amberjack and cobia concentrated on wrecks. Although you will find some grouper and snapper on the wrecks, I target these species on specific hard bottom spots. Some of the other species, like kingfish and tuna, we'll have to troll to locate and capture.

Moving a little closer to shore, there has been a surprisingly consistent sailfish bite in 60 feet of water - wow! But if plying the high seas of the gulf aren't your thing, there are lots of other fish much closer to shore. Spanish mackerel, kingfish, red grouper and gray snapper are species we can target much closer to shore.

Red snapper will open in June 1st and gag grouper will open July 1st.
